Hello.
No foundation, Milobina, and Manager Nonko are always welcome.
This time, as with last time, I'll introduce another amazing herb I encountered.
I wanted to share even more surprises about "Gettou," so in episode 5 of the 12 episodes,This is the second installment.
So, please stay with us until the end this time as well.
What happens to your skin when it oxidizes?
Last time, we talked about the antioxidant properties of ginger lily. This time, I'd like to explain in more detail just how dangerous oxidation is for the skin, and how to care for your skin after sun exposure.
However, while we know that oxidation is bad, we often don't know exactly why it's bad.
Simply put, cells become brittle and damaged when they oxidize.
A good example is plastic.
Plastic products left out in the sun tend to deteriorate over time, don't they?
I also use clothes pegs for hanging laundry. Lately, I've been bringing them inside the house when I'm not using them.
That's because if you leave it outside and use it like that, one day the clip will suddenly snap, and then the other clips will start breaking too, rendering it unusable.
This is precisely an oxidation reaction called photo-oxidation, and it's one example of how oxidation caused by ultraviolet light can cause plastics to crumble.
The same applies to your skin.
Oxidation causes collagen to break down, leading to wrinkles and sagging.
Furthermore, when the skin oxidizes and becomes damaged, the brain, as a defense mechanism, commands the body to "produce melanin!"
Then, melanocytes (factories) mass-produce melanin, which is the source of blemishes.
When skin function is weakened by oxidation, sufficient cell turnover (skin regeneration) cannot keep up, and substances accumulate in the skin.
As you can see, oxidation is a very troublesome phenomenon for the skin.
Oxidation → Inflammation → Oxidation: A vicious cycle
Furthermore, this oxidation phenomenon triggers an inflammatory response in cells.
When inflammation begins, the body uses energy that would normally be used for metabolism to "extinguish" the inflammation in order to repair it.
As a result, cell regeneration slows down, and old cells remain, accelerating the aging process.
However, the danger of oxidation doesn't end there.
When oxidation triggers inflammation as an immune response, it creates a vicious cycle where inflammation then attracts more oxidation, which in turn attacks even healthy cells.
This negative cycle of oxidation → inflammation → oxidation is called inflammating (inflammatory aging) in medical terms, and it is a major cause of premature aging.
This chronic inflammation caused by oxidation not only affects beauty, but also weakens blood vessels, leading to arteriosclerosis, and impacts the brain and cells, increasing the risk of dementia, lifestyle-related diseases, and cancer.
Therefore, maintaining a lifestyle that prevents oxidation, and utilizing herbs and plants that prevent oxidation, can be quite helpful in leading a youthful and healthy life.
In particular, lifestyle habits that cause oxidation
Even among celebrities we see on TV, we often notice that their skin has dulled, their faces have sagged, and their nasolabial folds are more pronounced compared to when they were younger.
Many of those who feel they have aged rapidly are heavy drinkers and heavy smokers.
In fact, drinking alcohol and smoking is the best (or worst?) combination for generating large amounts of reactive oxygen species.
Tobacco smoke (including heated tobacco products) contains trillions of free radicals, and just one cigarette can destroy a large amount of vitamin C (an antioxidant) in the body, causing severe inflammation in blood vessels.
Even if you don't smoke or drink alcohol, your everyday activities can generate large amounts of free radicals and promote oxidation.
A prime example of this is stress.
While moderate stress can actually have positive effects, such as adding zest to daily life, accumulating stress leads to the generation of large amounts of free radicals each time stress is felt, resulting in oxidation and inflammation.
On days when you've been exposed to UV rays, use ginger lily for antioxidant care.
Last time, I mentioned that ginger lily has about six times the antioxidant power of blueberries and about seven times that of red wine.
After a day of heavy sun exposure, your skin really needs the power of antioxidants to shine.
When skin is damaged by oxidation, collagen breaks down and melanin is produced in excess, leading to blemishes and sagging. That's why it's important to nourish your skin with antioxidants on the same day you get sunburned.
Alpinia zerumbet aromatic hydrosol is highly recommended for use as a toner because it contains a very large amount of polyphenols, which have strong antioxidant properties.
However, since the ginger lily aromatic hydrosol (hereafter referred to as ginger lily water) does not contain any "moisturizing ingredients" that retain moisture in the skin, please add a small amount of moisturizer such as glycerin to make your own homemade lotion.
Without this "moisturizer," the skin's natural moisturizing factors may not function properly, and your skin may actually lose its ability to retain moisture, so caution is necessary.
If you use these herbal waters as a toner, be sure to add a moisturizer beforehand.
Furthermore, the way you apply it to your skin is also very important.
As you can see from the fact that laundry dries differently in the sun compared to the shade, skin exposed to ultraviolet rays loses more moisture than you might think due to the "powerful drying effect" of ultraviolet rays.
Therefore, using plenty of it is the most important thing.
Ideally, apply a generous amount so that it flows down your skin, then gently press it in with your hands. Repeat this several times.
When the stratum corneum is sufficiently moisturized, your skin will feel cool. If you can reach that point, you're a pro at applying lotion!
If you have the time, a lotion pack is also recommended. The important thing is to make sure it doesn't dry out completely. A short time is enough; 2-3 minutes is sufficient to deliver moisture to your skin.
In this way, you can use the power of plants to say "thank you for your hard work" to your skin after a long day of battling UV rays. I believe that if you can find happiness in taking time to pamper yourself like this, your everyday life will become more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Because it's difficult to prevent oxidation.
In other words, if you live your life to the fullest, oxidation is inevitable.
Incidentally, as the term "oxidation" suggests, excessive oxygen intake is also a factor that generates large amounts of free radicals.
That's why many athletes look older than their actual age.
Among the people I know who enjoy running as a hobby, many have toned bodies, but their facial sagging is more pronounced than that of people their age.
In this way, I personally think that oxidation can also be a sign that we are working hard and enjoying the things we love.
It's kind of sad to completely avoid UV rays to prevent oxidation, or to demonize alcohol and cigarettes that we drink to relax, isn't it...?
Since we were born on this Earth, it would be a waste to limit ourselves all the time.
That's one way I see it.
However, if you don't take any precautions, you might develop a serious illness and lose the freedom to do what you love.
By understanding the facts, reviewing lifestyle habits that cause oxidation, considering a career change to reduce stress, and changing your mindset, along with utilizing antioxidant-rich foods and supplements, you can significantly protect your body.
Don't be overly afraid, but be sure to take care of yourself and cherish yourself.
I think that kind of relationship is the best.
