Why is Alpinia zerumbet so versatile? | Diverse components that create complex fragrances

Hello.

No foundation, Milobina, and Manager Nonko are always welcome.

Continuing from last time, I want to share even more surprising facts about the amazing herb I encountered, "Getto" (shell ginger). Although we're nearing the end of the 12-part series, this is the ninth installment.

So, please stay with us until the end this time as well.

What does ginger lily smell like?

"I've never heard of ginger lily before. What does it smell like?"

This is the most difficult question...

To be honest, it's difficult to find a perfect description of the scent of ginger lily.

Nevertheless, I will do my best to express myself!

First, there's a slightly spicy, mild "tingling" sensation.

It also has a woody quality that gives a calming feeling.

Furthermore, it has a sharp, clean strength that evokes a sense of cleanliness, and I can also sense scents reminiscent of Australian tea tree and eucalyptus.

And even deeper within that, there's the sweet scent of cinnamon, a kind of oriental sweetness, and an earthy scent reminiscent of soil.

However, it also has a floral quality reminiscent of flowers, adding a touch of elegance to the scent.

Another thing to note is that it has a fairly strong camphor-like scent, which might remind some people of old Japanese houses or traditional Japanese clothing.

And it even has a hint of lemon-like scent and a refreshing minty feel.

Just by looking at this, I think you can understand the complexity of the scent of ginger lily and how difficult it is to describe!

It changes with quality. The mystery of scent imagery.

Before starting this job, I studied at an aromatherapy school called Green Flask for about three years.

In that class, there was a lecture where we smelled a scent and wrote down the image it evoked.

This is also quite fun, and I used to have my students try it when I was an aromatherapy instructor.

What struck me at the time was how different the flavor profile was when using affordable peppermint compared to high-quality organic peppermint.

With affordable essential oils, you can only come up with simple images like "chewing gum" or "mint shampoo,"

With organic essential oils,
"A young woman with long hair is being blown by the wind in a meadow."
It evokes complex images, such as "looking up at the blue sky through an endless pasture."

This wasn't just a one-time occurrence; the same trend was observed every time I tried it.

In my experience, the higher the quality of the organic essential oil, the more meticulous the selection of raw materials, cultivation, harvesting, and distillation, the richer and more complex the fragrance tends to be.

Fragrances are not made up of just one component, but rather of a complex combination of many aromatic compounds.

I believe that by using carefully cultivated ingredients and distilling them meticulously to preserve as much of their components as possible, a wider variety of components remain, which contributes to the richness of the aroma.

These aromatic compounds are also a type of phytochemical produced by plants.

Because each component has different properties, plants containing a diverse range of components are likely to have a variety of functions.

Furthermore, each component doesn't just work on its own; when combined, they can enhance each other's effects or, conversely, moderate them.

Therefore, it is thought that the presence of various components is related to the wide range of functions that the plant can perform.

The diverse fragrance components of ginger lily are comparable to those of rose.

So, how diverse are the components contained in "Gettou," which has given such a complex impression?

It is said that ginger lily contains more than 300 different components.

In fact, ginger lily has

• A fragrance component also found in lavender: linalool
• A fragrance component also found in citrus fruits: limonene
• Fragrance components reminiscent of a forest: α-pinene, 1,8-cineole
• Fragrance component also found in roses: geraniol
- Camphor scent: Camphor

It contains various components (phytochemicals), such as those listed above.

Similarly, Damask rose, also known as the "queen of aromatherapy," is known for containing a great many beneficial components.

If you take a good sniff of real roses, you'll find that they contain 1,8-cineole, which is also found in ginger lily, and some unexpected fragrance components that are reminiscent of camphor.

By the way, ginger lily and rose go well together, and blending them creates a very rich fragrance, so I recommend it.

I believe that the wide variety of ingredients in ginger lily is one reason why it has been used so extensively in skincare and daily life.

Getto (shell ginger) is a herb that thrives in Okinawa's harsh natural environment, requires neither fertilizer nor pesticides, can be harvested multiple times a year, and is an indispensable herb in people's lives, almost like a part of their soul.

Getto (Alpinia zerumbet) is a traditional medicinal herb (crude drug) with a long history of supporting people's health.

The world of herbs is truly fascinating the more you learn about it.
