My story of graduating from being a cosmetics wanderer | Episode 3: I just really wanted to be beautiful

This is a series of posts I wrote in my email newsletter back in my mid-30s, titled "My Story of Graduating from Being a Cosmetics Gypsy," which I'm now republishing for my official blog.

What were the motivations behind the creation of Mirobina, and why did they end up with skincare products made from natural ingredients?

We will leave behind written materials to convey the background information that cannot be fully expressed on the product page alone.

All 15 episodes are being released sequentially.

I really want to be beautiful

To our regular subscribers,
For first-timers,

Hello.
This is Nonko, the shop manager of Aromatic Life Magic Soap (*^_^*)

Now that I think about it, when I remember my twenties, I guess I lacked self-confidence back then. "I just desperately wanted to be beautiful," that's what I realize now.

That intense feeling is what leads me down the wrong path...

Intense feelings,
and,
Beliefs that are almost like mind control can be truly frightening at times.

Actually, as some of you may know, I used to sell high-end French skincare cosmetics mainly at department stores.

”"Former beauty consultant"”

Since being approached at a cosmetics counter in the Keio Department Store in Shinjuku during my university days, I have been troubled by acne, enlarged pores, and tired-looking skin.

I believed that I could become beautiful through "skincare," so I trusted and used whatever was written in magazines or recommended by beauty consultants, trying various things, but nothing worked at all.

Before I knew it, I was dealing with a lot of skin problems.

A pure 20-something who doesn't know how to doubt.

I can now confidently say that my skin got worse after I started using skincare products, but back then I had no idea.

I was, in short, a "cosmetic gypsy."

Even if I didn't see any noticeable effects, my dreams about cosmetics grew even stronger, and without any doubt, I pressed on towards my quest for the perfect product with even greater enthusiasm. I think this was ultimately due to the influence of magazines and the beauty consultants who stimulated my desires by promising, "If you use this, you'll become beautiful!"

Well, when I looked at the beauty pages in magazines, they really made it seem like using these products would produce immediate results, and I didn't think they were advertisements, so I thought they had about the same credibility as word-of-mouth recommendations these days.

So I devoured all that information, and I never doubted that cosmetics actually worked. I think I was really naive back then.

Intense feelings and mind control

I even used body lotions for permanent hair removal, but they had absolutely no effect. But somehow, I got used to them not working, and I remember feeling like, "Here we go again... so disappointing... I'll have to find something else."

Having worked in this field, I've become quite knowledgeable about this, and even now, thinking about that statement still makes me angry—wasn't it misleading advertising and a violation of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law!? But even now, there are still plenty of strange advertisements and statements out there, so not much has changed...

I've digressed a bit, but I think that with that kind of external information, people like me, who are naive and unsuspecting, were mind-controlled and developed blind "beliefs." But there must be many other people like me.

My current job is based on various experiences that have led me to believe that I am not bound by such preconceptions.

Missing out on "beauty",

I feel like my job is to help free people who have gotten lost.

Next time, I might talk about my encounter with my destined cosmetic product...
