Atami Plum Garden Plum Festival in progress
Actually, last week I took the Shinkansen to Kyoto to see my daughter, and since I was there anyway, I decided to stop by Atami on the way back.
When you think of Atami, you think of hot springs. I like the hot springs in Atami because the quality of the water is so good, but this time I was carrying a heavy suitcase around,
I was looking for a place that was the easiest to get to and would be satisfying, when a taxi driver told me,
"There is a plum garden, and the plums there are starting to bloom. They are beautiful, so why don't you go and see them?"
So he said so, and I decided to go.
As a side note, I took a taxi three times in Atami, and all the drivers were kind and friendly!
Some people would talk to me first, and when I started talking to them I was taught all sorts of things, and we even talked about current political topics (we even talked about the demonstrations to dismantle the Ministry of Finance!), which was a great experience.
If you ever get in a taxi in Atami, be sure to try and say something to the driver. I'm sure you'll have some wonderful memories.
Back to the main story, I arrived at Atami Plum Garden just before noon, and it was quite crowded even though it was a weekday. There were lockers available, so I shoved my suitcase in there and set off.
The early and mid-blooming flowers are now in full bloom (about two weeks later than last year).
As it says online, the plum blossoms weren't in full bloom, but I was still able to enjoy them to a certain extent and it was fun.
And surprisingly, the admission fee is only 300 yen. For those staying at hotels in the city, it's 100 yen!
And honestly... I really liked it here. (^o^)

The entrance fee is only 300 yen, but the plum trees are very well maintained and you can really feel the love the people here have for them.
There was a wide variety of plum trees, and it was interesting to see signs with the names of the plum trees hanging on the trees. Some of the trees were over 100 years old!
Here and there, the penetrating scent of plums drifted through the air...and there was also a slight hint of camphor, which was a delightful and yet very calming scent.
It was a little embarrassing, but I stuck my nose to the flower and sniffed it (lol)
Then, when we followed the route further in, we came across a small but powerful waterfall, which was also beautiful and we took tons of photos and videos (lol).
This was also a great healing point.
Then, I turned around and walked back a little, and found a foot bath in Atami Onsen. I was intrigued, but I started to worry about time, so I passed by for a while...
I really wanted to go in! I walked back uphill, panting, and enjoyed a foot bath in my favorite Atami Onsen. I didn't buy one, but they also sold towels for 100 yen.
There were several foreigners there and they seemed confused about how to enter, so I spoke to them in broken English and enjoyed the interaction.
Speaking of soothing, I thought I heard a cute voice coming from the top of the plum tree, so I went looking for it and discovered the super cute Mejiro!
They were so cute, sucking nectar from the plum blossoms with all their might.
There was also a street performer named Yuki, who was also amazing!
When performing difficult tricks, he would mutter things like, "Concentrate!" or "I can definitely do it!" and I thought it was great that he was trying so hard.
He had a difficult time during the coronavirus pandemic, but now he's back and working hard as a street performer. He's someone you just want to support, so I looked for him on Instagram and followed him.
Please visit this plum garden. I highly recommend it. It is also famous for its beautiful autumn leaves.
