This is the fifth installment in a series in which I share various insights gained from that experience.<\/p>

Today, I'll talk about one of the things that helped me finally stop using foundation.<\/p>

A life where I use foundation 365 days a year<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Because I was self-conscious about my skin and, being inherently earnest, I believed what the beauty consultants and magazines (magazines were my main source of information back then!) wrote.<\/p>

I believed that foundation was essential to protect my skin, so even on days when I didn't have work, and on days when I stayed home all day (I generally like being at home and tend to be a homebody), I wore foundation diligently 365 days a year.<\/p>

Because of my earnest nature, I followed the instructions I was given: a thin layer of liquid foundation, followed by plenty of powder, and then brushed it off with a large, high-quality brush. That was my daily routine.<\/p>

By the way, when I was a beauty consultant, during my breaks I would use a milky, wipe-off cleanser to remove all my makeup and then start over with skincare. Those were the days.<\/p>

But I genuinely believed this was the "correct" way to do beauty, and I practiced it wholeheartedly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

With a face like this, I can't go outside...<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

And yet, I stopped wearing foundation. Basically, once I'm convinced that "this is the right thing to do," I don't waver easily.<\/p>

However, my skin was dull and rough to the touch. Its texture was so uneven that, no matter how you looked at it, I didn't have beautiful skin, and I was terrified of walking outside.<\/p>

My pores were so clogged with blackheads that my ex-husband would tease me by calling them "strawberries, strawberries." I hated my skin so much that I tried all sorts of skincare products, but I only made it worse.<\/p>

If I were there for my past self, now that I have the knowledge to keep my skin beautiful, I would desperately try to stop her from doing that diet and skincare routine...<\/p>

Since I hated my own skin, I was determined to make it beautiful no matter what!<\/p>

But that actually ended up damaging my skin...<\/p>

Despite these adversities, I remained unwavering, suppressing my true feelings and continuing my no-foundation lifestyle.<\/p>

Going outside is especially terrifying; I stare intently at the skin of everyone I pass.<\/p>

"That person also uses foundation properly and has beautiful skin."<\/p>

And I even felt a little envious.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It was a matter of self-awareness.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

While I was spending my days in that rude way, staring intently at other people's skin, one day I suddenly had this thought:<\/p>

"These people look at my face,<\/p>

"That's so gross! What kind of woman doesn't even wear foundation? How embarrassing!"<\/p>

Do you really think that?<\/p>

No, I don't think that."<\/p>

First of all, I was probably the only one who would stare intently at the skin of passersby (laughs).<\/p>

In other words, it's a matter of self-awareness. Nobody's really paying that much attention to me.<\/p>

Everyone is just busy and passing by.<\/p>

However, even if there are people who think that way, it has no effect on me whatsoever.<\/p>

That's just what that person thinks in their heart.<\/p>

I didn't need to take responsibility or feel ashamed of it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Those were words I had been saying to myself.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

And now, looking back, that wasn't what other people thought of me.<\/p>

"The words and feelings I had directed at myself"<\/p>

That's how it was.<\/p>

They dislike their true selves, further burden their already suffering skin, and try to hide it out of shame.<\/p>

I didn't truly accept myself. I hadn't come to terms with myself.<\/p>

But that led to my current work in skincare. So, I think I was quite earnest and hardworking back then.<\/p>

The reason I started this job was because of a particular soap. I'll tell you more about it another time, but using that soap helped me get rid of the dullness and roughness I had been experiencing with my skin.<\/p>

Then one night, while I was on a train, I saw my face reflected in the window, which was like a mirror.<\/p>

Her face was so beautiful. Her skin had a translucent quality, like the skin of an egg.<\/p>

(This must be due to the lighting. But how happy I would be if I could have skin like that.)<\/p>

I remember feeling a pang of sadness at that moment.<\/p>

But, in the end, that became a reality.<\/p>

Giving up foundation ultimately led to healing both my mind and, in reality, my skin.<\/p>

Now that I'm 57, I understand this better, but writing this blog has made me realize that my decision to stop wearing foundation might have been a choice to cherish and reclaim myself.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
